ETM 2080 - Industrial Plastics


The purpose of this course is to introduce students to plastics materials and processes and develop basic competencies appropriate for a manufacturing manager and/or engineer. These competencies will be developed from material presented in lectures, labs, the text, various assignments, and through “hands on” learning experiences.

Requisites: ET 1100 and ETM 1120 or 1130 and (CHEM 1210 or 1500 or 1510) and Advanced Standing in ETM
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 2.0 lecture, 2.0 laboratory
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to define key material properties and atomic structures relevant to plastics.
  • Students will be able to identify common plastics through test procedures.
  • Students will be able to list thermoset and thermoplastic materials and describe their properties and an example of their use in a product
  • Students will be able to describe plastics manufacturing processes including molding, casting, forming, fabricating and/or finishing plastics.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the safe and correct use of the processing equipment in a laboratory setting.
  • Students will be able to explain what plastics are, how they are made, why plastics are used and their impact on society.
  • Students will be able to analyze cost parameters from different plastic processes.
  • Students will be able to explain renewability in plastics and plastics made from renewable materials.
  • Students will be able to write professional reports, article reviews, and perform in team environment through class projects and technical report assignments.
