ETM 3470 - Plastics Molding Processes


In-depth analysis of selected molding plastics processes including essentials of product/process design and their impact on product quality. Lab activities involve extensive analysis of molding and processes.

Requisites: ETM 2080 and 2180 and (ETM 3510 or (IT 216 and IT 351)) or and advanced standing in ETM
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 2.0 lecture, 2.0 laboratory
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • The student will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the safe and correct use of the processing equipment located in the O.U. plastics labs.
  • The student will be able to describe common molding quality defects and explain their probable causes.
  • The student will be able to identify the major components of the molding machines and describe their purposes.
  • The student will be able to identify the major components of the molds and describe their purpose. Additionally the student will be able to identify and explain the reasons for various gate & runners systems typical to injection & compression molds.
  • The student will demonstrate a high level of integrity, ethical behavior and professionalism during all class activities.
  • The student will design and construct a mold to be used in the plastics lab by other classes.
  • The student will understand and be able to explain the molding processes, their uses, and their relative importance in the plastics industry.
  • The student will work effectively in a team environment during a variety of class activities.
