ETM 3480 - Plastics Forming and Composites Fabrication


Advanced study of plastics product manufacturing using extrusion, blow molding, thermo-forming, fabrication, composite, and finishing processes. Includes part and mold/die design, material selection, process optimization, and manufacturing costs. Lab activities include mold building, and testing and process optimization.

Requisites: ETM 2080 and advanced standing in ETM
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 2.0 lecture, 2.0 laboratory

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify the major components of the thermoforming and rotational molding machines and describe their purposes.
  • Students will be able to describe common quality defects and explain their probable causes.
  • Students will be able to explain the thermoforming and rotational molding processes, their uses and relative importance in the plastics industry.
  • Students will be able to explain key factors in the design of molds/dies and parts.
  • Students will be able to design and build high quality molds/dies and trim fixtures for use in the plastics laboratory.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the safe and correct use of the processing equipment located in the OHIO plastics labs.
  • Students will be able to successfully to complete a variety of learning activities including experiments, mold design and construction in a team environment.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a high level of integrity, ethical behavior and professionalism in all class activities.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate communication skills during written, technical and verbal activities.
