ETM 3100 - Product Design


Study of product design from concept to release for production, with emphasis on design for manufacturability. Lab activities include the design, development, and creation of mockups and prototypes.

Requisites: (ETM 2080 or 2180 or 2510) and advanced standing in ETM and WARNING: No credit for both this course and the following (always deduct credit for the first course taken): ETM 3010
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 2.0 lecture, 2.0 laboratory

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to explain the product realization process from the perspective of the departments involved in new product development.
  • Students will be able to use engineering prints as a communication tool from both the creation and interpretation perspective.
  • Students will be able to describe lifecycle of a component part that is used within a product and the documentation required to maintain traceability through the life of the part.
  • Students will be able to complete documentation and analysis commonly used during the product realization process.
  • Students will be able to describe to role of modern methods of intellectual property data management through PLM, ERP and CRM systems.
  • Students will be able to design and fabricate parts using rapid prototyping as a constraint of the design process.
