ETM 4010 - Dimensional Analysis

Will deal specifically with the analysis phase of dimensional management. The main areas covered are linear and radial statistical stack-ups of dynamic mechanical assemblies that use general and geometric dimensions. Some information is given regarding two and three-dimensional analysis methods. The primary method of learning will take place through analytical problem solving using manual and computer methods.

Requisites: ETM 3010 and advanced standing in ETM
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • Analyze dimensional appropriateness of mechanical parts based on part function and assembly relationships including general and geometric dimensions.
  • Perform linear and radial statistical analyses of part/assembly stack-ups using pre-printed forms and standardized rules.
  • Understand how different geometric tolerances affect the part/assembly stack-up.
  • Understand how to ¿roll up¿ and ¿roll down¿ tolerances for an assembly based on predetermined objectives.
  • Understand the similarities and differences between worst case, root sums of squares (RSS), Benderized RSS and Monty Carlo analysis techniques..
  • Use Microsoft Excel to help analyze part/assembly stack-ups.
