JOUR 2310 - Introduction to Multiplatform Reporting and Writing


Basics of information gathering, reporting, writing, and multiplatform publication of news and strategic communications. Either 2310 or 2311 satisfies journalism core requirements.

Requisites: Grade of 75% or higher on School of Journalism grammar exam or C or better in JOUR 1330 and WARNING: not JOUR 2311
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 1.0 lecture, 4.0 laboratory

Learning Outcomes:
  • Define news.
  • Distill a story or event into its most important elements.
  • Identify the basic elements of a news story, including the who, what, where, when, why, how and what’s next.
  • Learn the common ethical issues that arise in writing news stories, including those that deal with diversity, gender, and freedom of speech.
  • Learn to gather information and write news stories with careful attention to accuracy and clarity of writing.
  • Shoot and edit short videos.
  • Understand how news writing skills apply across platforms, including in video, audio, pictures.
  • Understand how this definition applies across different media, especially online.
  • Use online tools, such as video, hypertext, images, and graphics to tell news stories and convey information effectively.
  • Write news stories using the basic forms, such as the inverted pyramid with a summary lead.
