JOUR 3100 - Communication Law


Principles and case studies in communication law, constitutional guarantees, libel, privacy, contempt, privilege, copyright, and government regulatory agencies.

Requisites: C or better in JOUR 2311 or concurrent
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to apply First Amendment law to various situations they may face as journalists.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of how U.S. courts balance the First Amendment with other governmental interests (national security, privacy, libel, obscenity, access to information, confidentiality, and free press v. fair trial).
  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of how, why and when First Amendment rights can be limited.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of gender, race ethnicity, sexual orientation and, as appropriate, other forms of diversity in domestic society in relation to freedom of expression and the First Amendment
