JOUR 4390 - Storytelling on Business and the Economy


Students examine the roles of business, finance, societal forces, and journalism in shaping the global marketplace and economy. Students learn to tell the stories of business and the economy in a variety of formats, using analysis of documents and data to find the narrative in the numbers.

Requisites: Jr or Sr
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to critically evaluate work for accuracy, fairness, clarity and appropriate style, and grammar.
  • Students will be able to explain professional ethical principles and work ethically in pursuit of truth, accuracy, fairness, and diversity.
  • Students will be able to explain and apply the business concepts of capitalism and the economic, financial, and societal forces governing for-profit enterprises.
  • Students will be able to identify and explain the role government plays in business and the economy.
  • Students will be able to write correctly and clearly in forms and styles appropriate to business publications and media.
  • Students will be able to identify and apply appropriate sources when writing about public, private, nonprofit and governmental organizations.
