Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to articulate insights about one¿s own cultural rules and biases in comparison to those associated with Japanese society presented in class.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the complexity of elements important to members of Japanese culture in relation to its history, values, politics, communication styles, economy, beliefs, and practices in contrast to their own.
  • Students will be able to interpret intercultural experience from a Japanese worldview and act in a supportive manner as they recognize similarities and differences to their own cultural perspectives.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of cultural differences in verbal and non-verbal communication between Japanese culture and their own, and to negotiate a shared understanding based on these differences.
  • Students will be able to ask complex questions about Japanese culture and to articulate answers to these questions that reflect multiple cultural perspectives including their own.
  • Students will be able to initiate and develop interactions with Japanese people from a variety of age groups and professions while recognizing that cultural differences come not only from differing worldviews but are also influenced by age, gender, and so
