LING 3900 - Language and Gender


Introduction to the study of the relation between gender and language use. This course explores how language participates both in gender practices and in how people construct their gender identities in different sociocultural contexts.

Requisites: Jr or Sr
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Describe and reflect on how you construct your own gender identity through every day talk (using conversational strategies and practices such as turn-taking, politeness, minimal responses, interruptions, hedges, compliments, apologies, etc.).
  • Describe one or more cross-cultural perspectives on language and gender.
  • Explain and analyze gender as a social construct.
  • Explain historical and theoretical approaches to language and gender studies.
  • Identify some cross-cultural differences in the social construction of gender.
  • Summarize key research findings in language and gender studies.
