LING 4700 - Syntactic Description of English


Focuses on the prominent structural patterns observed in various phrases and sentences in English. The approach is descriptive rather than explanatory. The students learn how to analyze syntactic patterns of English objectively and how to express them in grammatical terminology.

Requisites: LING 3500
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will learn how different types of clause are related to types of speech act.
  • Students will learn how different types of syntactic patterns contribute to the information packaging in the clause.
  • Students will learn to recognize various types of syntactic constituents in English.
  • Students will understand similarities and differences that govern different types of constituents.
  • Students will understand the internal structures of those constituents.
