ML 4635 - Teaching Foreign Languages in the Elementary School


Readings and discussions of the cognitive development of children and second language acquisition provide the basis for practical class work. Students design units and prepare learning activities to present in class. Lab experience includes 20 hours observation and participation on the elementary school level. Required of all foreign language majors who plan to teach.

Requisites: FR 3120 or GER 3120 or SPAN 3120

Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Design and implement lessons and asessment tools.
  • Develop lessons and materials in accordance with ACTFL standards.
  • Understand terminology pertinent to second language acquisition theories.
  • Use techniques for behavior and time management in the pre-K-6 classroom.
  • Use understanding of methods and theories to develop appropriate instructional methods and materials for the pre-k-6 level.
  • The successful student will know the three types of pre-K-6 language programs: FLES, FLEX, and immersion.
