MUS 4071 - Counterpoint II


Analysis and composition of early 18th-century contrapuntal forms, mostly in the style of Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries.

Requisites: MUS 2020 and 2040
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will learn the principles of two-voice counterpoint in a tonal idiom.
  • Students will write a 3- or 4-voice fugue in the style of J. S. Bach.
  • Students will write a brief example of a choral fugue, setting a short sacred text.
  • Students will write a stylistically effective invention for keyboard in the style of J. S. Bach.
  • Students will write effective imitative tonal counterpoint in 3 and 4 voices.
