NRSE 4550 - Evidence-Based Nursing Practice


Focuses on professional nursing practice that is grounded in the translation of current evidence into practice. Includes components of evidence-based practice, including collaboration with the client, integration of concepts of qualitative and quantitative research and evaluation of findings. Explores the critique of published research and moving research to practice.

Requisites: NRSE 4510 or concurrent and (MATH 2500 or PSY 1110 or 2110, QBA 2010, or MATH 1500 or concurrent)
Credit Hours: 4
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 4.0 seminar

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements of the research process and models for applying evidence to clinical practice.
  • Students will be able to describe mechanisms to resolve identified practice discrepancies between identified standards and practice that may adversely impact patient outcomes.
  • Students will be able to evaluate the credibility of sources of information, including but not limited to databases and Internet resources.
  • Students will be able to examine the process for how nursing and related healthcare quality and safety measures are developed, validated, and endorsed.
  • Students will be able to identify interrelationships among theory, practice, research and evidence for practice.
  • Students will be able to integrate evidence, clinical judgment, interprofessional perspectives, and patient preferences in planning, implementing, and evaluating outcomes of care.
