PETE 2330 - Inclusive Physical Activity and Sport for Individuals with Disabilities


This course is intended to offer students insight into current concepts and trends for inclusive physical activity and sport for individuals with disabilities. Through this course, prospective physical educators and coaches gain knowledge and skills to employ successful instructional strategies for inclusion of all individuals with disabilities. Students will connect knowledge of theory and practice through meaningful physical activity experiences in learning labs and field settings.

Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 2.0 lecture, 2.0 laboratory

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to understand the development and issues surrounding the construct of disability and be familiar with current concepts and trends in inclusive physical education, physical activity, and sport settings.
  • Students will be able to discuss history and legislation pertaining to individuals with disabilities in physical education, physical activity, and sport.
  • Students will be able to understand that inclusive physical education, physical activity, and sport includes issues related to access, accommodation, and transformation.
  • Students will be able to understand that barriers to inclusive physical education, physical activity, and sport involve person-related and context-related factors.
  • Students will be able to describe the influence of selected diseases, conditions, or disabilities on learning and performing physical activities.
  • Students will be able to plan strategies for modifications and accommodations as related to individuals with differing abilities and capacities involved in physical education, physical activity, and sport.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate appropriate instructional strategies for inclusive physical education, physical activity and sport through modifications and accommodations to meet unique needs of all individuals in field settings.
