PHYS 2051H - General Physics for Physics and Astronomy Majors

First course in general physics for physics and astronomy majors, with emphasis on interactive learning methods. Lecture and laboratory components are combined into a single course, so students are not required to sign up for a separate lab class. Topics to be covered are: vectors and motion of objects, velocity and acceleration, forces, linear momentum, Newton’s Laws, work and energy, conservation of momentum and energy, angular momentum, conservation of angular momentum, oscillations, fluids, heat and the First Law of thermodynamics, heat engines and refrigerators.

Requisites: MATH 266A or 266B or (2301 or concurrent)
Credit Hours: 5
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 5.0 lecture
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • Apply the equations of oscillations to waves and simple physical systems.
  • Know the concepts of work and energy and when conservation laws apply.
  • Know the principles of thermodynamics and the operation of heat engines and refrigerators.
  • Learn how to solve real-world problems using mathematical techniques.
  • Understand the equations of motion for objects under the influence of forces.
