PHYS 2052H - General Physics for Physics and Astronomy Majors

First course in general physics for physics and astronomy majors, with emphasis on interactive learning methods. Lecture and laboratory components are combined into a single course, so students are not required to sign up for a separate lab class. Topics to be covered are: traveling waves, standing waves, interference of waves, optics including reflection and refraction, electric forces, electric field, electric potential, electric current, electronic circuits, magnetic field, induction, and electromagnetic waves.

Requisites: MATH 2301 and (PHYS 2051 or 2051H or 2054 and 2055)
Credit Hours: 5
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 5.0 lecture
Grades: Eligible Grades: A-F,WP,WF,WN,FN,AU,I
Learning Outcomes:
  • Apply the equations of wave motion to simple phenomena such as standing waves and wave interference.
  • Calculate the effect of simple lenses and mirrors on the propagation of light rays.
  • How electronic circuits work, including resistance, capacitance, and induction.
  • How to calculate the electric force between two objects and the electric potential of a test charge.
  • Learn about electromagnetic waves and how they are derived from Maxwell’s equations.
  • Understand the concepts of electric charge, electric and magnetic fields, and applications of Gauss’ Law.
