PHYS 4061 - Geometrical and Physical Optics


The behavior of light in both classical and quantum realms. Topics covered include: geometrical optics, the wave nature of light, interference, polarization, diffraction, the optical properties of materials, holography, and selected modern applications.

Requisites: MATH 2302 and (PHYS 2052 or 2056 and 2057)
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Be able to perform basic calculations depending upon the wave nature of light.
  • Be familiar with the principles of geometrical optics.
  • Understand how interferometry works and the use of interferometry in spectral analysis and laser-mode selection.
  • Understand principal concepts in optical instrument design.
  • Understand the formation of images, including holographic images.
