POLS 4880 - Environmental and Public Policy Dispute Resolution
Examines how collaborative dispute resolution approaches can be used to address complex public issues such as land use disputes, the management of natural resources, and the use of social services. Topics and skill building exercises include conflict assessment, consensus-based decision-making, interest-based negotiation, mediation, and the politics of public dispute resolution.

Learning Outcomes:
- Classify the differences between interests, rights and power and explain how this theoretical framework informs your understanding of public dispute resolution.
- Critically analyze the limitations of traditional dispute resolution processes for complex, multi-party public disputes.
- Demonstrate your understanding of conflict assessment, and practice this skill by conducting an assessment of a simulated public dispute.
- Demonstrate your understanding of mediation by critically analyzing case studies to determine whether mediation would be an appropriate dispute resolution process.
- Discuss the theory of interest-based negotiation; explain why this form of negotiation facilitates consensus-building, and demonstrate your interest-based negotiation skills.
- Explain the meaning and significance of consensus-based decision-making.
