REC 1140 - Fundamentals of River Kayaking


Introduces students to the knowledge and skills needed to safely and enjoyably kayak on gentle rivers.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify and describe equipment, clothing, and accessories needed for safe and enjoyable river kayak adventures.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in performing basic river kayak strokes, techniques, and maneuvers.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in performing basic self- and assisted-rescue techniques in river kayaking.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in basic river navigation and travel techniques.
  • Students will be able to formulate an energy control plan that takes into consideration such factors as nutrition, fitness, and the physical demands of river kayaking.
  • Students will be able to apply basic principles of safety and risk management in minimizing accident potential in river kayaking.
  • Students will be able to apply knowledge from the discipline of environmental ethics to minimize environmental and social impacts related to river kayaking.
  • Students will be able to develop trip plans for single and multiday river kayaking experiences.
  • Students will be able to engage in river kayaking as an ongoing leisure pursuit.
  • Students will be able to articulate the general value of river kayaking from various disciplinary perspectives, including such disciplines as natural resource management, public health, and parks, recreation and leisure studies.
  • Students will be able to meaningfully communicate learning in appropriate formats and language.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a sense of self by reflecting on lessons learned through multiple field experiences.
