REC 1142 - Coastal Kayaking


Introduces students to the knowledge and skills needed to safely and enjoyably kayak on lakes, calm protected coastal environments, and other flatwater settings.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify and describe equipment and clothing needed for safe and enjoyable coastal kayak adventures.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in performing basic coastal kayak strokes, techniques, and maneuvers.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in performing basic self- and assisted-rescue techniques in coastal kayaking.
  • Students will be able to explain the Rules of the Road, basic navigational techniques, and the effects of winds, tides and currents on navigational decision-making in coastal kayaking.
  • Students will be able to formulate an energy control plan that takes into consideration such factors as nutrition, fitness, and the physical demands of coastal kayaking.
  • Students will be able to apply basic principles of safety and risk management in minimizing accident potential in coastal kayaking.
  • Students will be able to apply knowledge from the discipline of environmental ethics to minimize environmental and social impacts related to coastal kayaking.
  • Students will be able to develop trip plans for single and multiday coastal kayaking experiences.
  • Students will be able to identify and utilize resources for continuing their development in the sport of coastal kayaking.
  • Students will be able to articulate the general value of coastal kayaking from various disciplinary perspectives, including such disciplines as natural resource management, public health, and parks, recreation and leisure studies.
  • Students will be able to meaningfully communicate learning in appropriate formats and language.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a sense of self by reflecting on lessons learned through multiple field experiences.
