REC 1150 - Whitewater Rafting


Introduces students to the knowledge and skills needed to safely and enjoyably participate in the sport of whitewater rafting.

Credit Hours: 1

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify and describe equipment, clothing needed for safe and enjoyable whitewater rafting adventures.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in performing basic whitewater rafting strokes, techniques, and maneuvers.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in performing basic self- and assisted-rescue techniques in whitewater rafting.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in whitewater rafting navigation and river running techniques.
  • Students will be able to formulate an energy control plan that takes into consideration such factors as nutrition, fitness, and the physical demands of whitewater rafting.
  • Students will be able to apply basic principles of safety and risk management in minimizing accident potential in whitewater rafting.
  • Students will be able to apply knowledge from the discipline of environmental ethics to minimize environmental and social impacts related to whitewater rafting.
  • Students will be able to develop trip plans for single and multiday whitewater rafting experiences.
  • Students will be able to identify and utilize resources for continuing their development in the sport of whitewater rafting.
  • Students will be able to articulate the general value of whitewater rafting from various disciplinary perspectives, including such disciplines as natural resource management, public health, and parks, recreation and leisure studies.
  • Students will be able to meaningfully communicate learning in appropriate formats and language.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a sense of self by reflecting on lessons learned through multiple field experiences.
