REC 4800 - Wilderness Literature


Explore the significance of wilderness in American history and culture. Students will analyze and interpret the works of Thoreau, Muir, Abbey, and others from religious, philosophical, psychological, and historical perspectives. The goal is to help students develop a deeper understanding of the idea of wilderness and in doing so enrich their use of wilderness settings for recreational and educational ends.

Requisites: Jr or Sr
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 seminar

Learning Outcomes:
  • Describe significant activities of wilderness in American history and culture.
  • Gain a better understanding of our own personal place, view, and influence of/on the natural world.
  • Through the writer’s insight students will attempt to gain a better understanding of human’s place, view, and influence of/on the natural world.
