SASM 4300 - Intercollegiate Athletics


This course focuses on critically analyzing the role of intercollegiate athletics in higher education. Particular focus and discussion centers on the prevailing contemporary issues in intercollegiate athletics including financial trends, legislation, conference alignment, reform, gender equity, graduation rates, gambling, violence, and diversity issues in coaching and management hiring.

Requisites: SASM 1001 or SASM 1010
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to articulate the place intercollegiate athletics within the sport industry and within higher education.
  • Students will be able to discuss issues and contemporary challenges in intercollegiate athletics.
  • Students will be able to practice using the NCAA LSDBi software.
  • Students will be able to analyze reform and reform groups.
  • Students will be able to explain industry terms in intercollegiate athletics related to NCAA compliance, recruiting, initial and continuing eligibility, finance, equity, diversity, and media.
  • Students will be able to explain the governance of intercollegiate athletics.
