SOC 3290 - Race and Ethnic Relations

• Students will be able to identify and employ key sociological concepts relating to race and ethnicity.
• Students will be able to explain the distinction between social differentiation and social stratification.
• Students will be able to employ and evaluate sociological theories of racial and ethnic group relationships in the United States.
• Students will be able to explain and critically evaluate race and ethnicity as social and political constructions, including explaining how these constructions inform their own cultural rules and biases.
• Students will be able to critically analyze contemporary social and cultural discourse on race and ethnicity.
• Students will be able to discuss race and ethnicity in U.S. history and explain how historical inequalities contribute to contemporary racial and ethnic inequalities.
• Students will be able to evaluate the degree of institutional discrimination in major U.S. institutions, including housing, criminal justice, education, economics, health, and popular culture.
• Students will be able to discuss the variability in the migration patterns, experiences, and verbal and non-verbal communication of selected racial and ethnic groups in the United States.
• Students will be able to identify and assess the impact of prejudices, stereotypes, discrimination, racism, and media representations on racial and ethnic groups.
• Students will be able to apply knowledge about race and ethnicity to their everyday interactions and in support of culturally different others while suspending judgment.
• Students will be able to discuss the changing nature of societal reactions to racial and ethnic diversity.
• Students will be able to discuss the social, economic, and political implications of changing national and global demographics.
• Students will be able to critically analyze current events and complex contemporary debates about race and ethnic relations using sociological concepts and theories.
