SOC 4950 - Sociology Capstone


Students apply and integrate knowledge and techniques from their coursework to complete a sociological research or applied project. Students review literature, collect and analyze data, engage in peer review, and learn skills for effective professional presentation of their work. Students also learn about careers in sociology, opportunities for advanced study, and communication skills to make their sociological training and expertise meaningful to the general public. Topics vary according to instructor.

Requisites: 18 Hours in SOC including 3000 and 3500 and Sr only

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to apply and adapt sociological concepts, theories, and methodologies to a contemporary research problem.
  • Students will be able to conduct research design by reviewing literature, developing sociological research questions, using appropriate research methods, conducting analysis of data, and communicating research results.
  • Students will be explain research methodologies and the epistemological perspectives that underlie them.
  • Students will be able to systematically assess and identify their own assumptions and biases and critically discuss how these impact their research questions and interpretations.
  • Students will be able to evaluate the relevance and ethical and scientific importance of their own research and that of others.
  • Students will be able to contribute to peer review processes.
  • Students will be able to effectively communicate original sociological research using written, oral, and visual forms of representation.
  • Students will be able to explain the value of their sociological training and expertise to sociological and non-sociological audiences.
  • Students will be able to critically evaluate recent research in their field and identify the implications for their own research and professional interests.
