THAR 2160 - Movement for Actors I


Introduces the student to fundamental concepts and principles of movement for actors. Emphasis is placed on the human body as an instrument of expression, and on developing strength, alignment and availability. Exercises and movement improvisations are designed to build individual skill, introduce basic movement vocabulary, and develop ensemble work in which particular attention will be given to listening and responding to spatial and temporal elements on stage.

Requisites: BFA Acting major
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 6.0 studio

Learning Outcomes:
  • Demonstrate a systematic awareness of movement and compositional elements of weight, resistance, effort, space and time.
  • Demonstrate individual rigor and generous work practices in an ensemble.
  • Develop ability to see and describe work of others utilizing the movement and verbal vocabulary of the studies and techniques.
  • Develop and demonstrate a personal warm-up derived from elements of mind/body techniques.
  • Develop strength, stamina and dynamic alignment connected to breathing fully.
  • Integrate physical purposefulness, listening and responding in exercises and studies.
