DSI 1810 - Introduction to Interpreting


Begin learning about the interpreting process while studying various models of interpreting. Takes a theoretical and practical approach to both consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.

Requisites: DSI 2110
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 2.0 lecture, 2.0 laboratory

Learning Outcomes:
  • Compare and contrast simultaneous and consecutive interpreting.
  • Describe the RID/NAD Code of Professional Conduct and apply it to various scenarios.
  • Explain the transliteration and the interpreting process and describe the difference.
  • Identify specific demands and controls in hypothetical scenarios focusing on educational settings.
  • Students will be introduced to the interpreting process and related challenges.
  • Students will discuss the role of culture in communication and how it can impact interpreting.
  • Students will have basic understand of the communication process and what interpreters do on a daily basis.
  • Students will improve their English vocabulary and listening skills.
  • Students will learn basic history related to interpreting.
  • Students will understand the career opportunities and work settings for interpreters as well as professionalism and certifications.
