DSI 2860 - Study of Deaf Culture


Provides an overview of the Deaf Community and its rich culture. Focuses on the American Deaf Community by exploring its origins, culture, identity politics, values, and history. Examines the oppression experienced by the Deaf community and the impact hegemony has had on the attitudes, values, and beliefs of both the hearing and d/Deaf community.

Credit Hours: 2
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will continue to examine current and historical practices within deaf education.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of audism both conscious and dysconscious.
  • Students will examine Deaf culture and its community values and behaviors.
  • Students will examine the influence of technology on Deaf culture.
  • Students will show an awareness of current and historical practices within the hearing world that impact the d/Deaf community.
  • Students will understand the social norms associated with Deaf culture.
