LET 2750 - Law Enforcement and the Deaf


Issues involved in working with a deaf victim or suspect. Covers ADA requirements for law enforcement, courts, and attorneys.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Compare perspectives of Deaf Culture versus a medical perspective as it relates to cross-cultural interaction.
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of an interpreter in legal settings.
  • Describe cochlear implants and implications for language and environmental sounds for communication.
  • Describe the hearing apparatus, degree of hearing loss, causes, as well as impact on physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being.
  • Explain the Americans with Disabilities Act as it applies to legal settings and rights.
  • Express the possible qualifications of an interpreter working in legal settings.
  • List and explain various physical, cognitive, emotional, and social support services for D/deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
  • Research assistive listening technology that individuals in law enforcement may encounter.
