LET 2901 - Unarmed Self-Defense


Introduction to the principles of unarmed self-defense from the perspective of a criminal justice practitioner.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Be familiar with the reality of attacks that occur on the street; Students will recognize patterns in attacks and learn to predict the attacker’s actions.
  • Demonstrate how to use verbal commands to de-escalate a situation.
  • Demonstrate how to use verbal commands to maintain distance.
  • Pick from a list the most common knife attacks.
  • Students will learn to use awareness and mindset to avoid and evade.
  • Understand the basics of awareness, pre-incident indicators, attack phases, travel awareness, abduction technique, physiological and psychological effects of fear and eminent danger, color conditions of awareness, OODA loop, and Hicks law.
  • Use verbal commands based on distance and severity of incident; Students will learn to use verbal commands and deescalate.
