PETE 2000 - Cultural Perspectives and Physical Activity


PETE 2000 examines the interrelationship between culture and physical activity. This course explicitly examines how people embody components of cultural identities (e.g., age, gender, race, ethnicity, social status, & geographical location) into their cultural values and beliefs, impacting physical activity and sports participation. Students have the opportunity to gather information and talk about different cultures and physical activity and their role and meaning in their own lives and the wider community.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to define the broad meaning of culture and articulate awareness of their own cultural identity.
  • Students will be able to describe how various cultural factors influence participation in physical activity: age (perceived in different cultures), gender, ethnicity, race, values, beliefs, social status, and geographical location.
  • Students will be able to compare and contrast cultural influences on physical activity in a non-biased, empathetic manner.
  • Students will be able to evaluate cultural differences in physical activity participation in verbal and nonverbal communication and formulate a shared understanding based on those differences.
  • Students will be able to interpret cultural beliefs, assumptions, values, and practices in context to appreciate other perspectives and different points of view as it relates to their participation in physical activity and sport.
  • Students will be able to articulate how the cultural impacts of the fitness movement of the 21st century differ from previous fitness movements throughout history.
  • Students will be able to apply strategies and techniques to monitor, maintain, and improve their life.
