IHS 2235 - Cross Cultural Issues in Tropical Diseases


Introduces students to the concept of culture as a relevant framework for understanding human behavior in relation to health. Focus is on biological, environmental, cultural, social, and political aspects relevant to tropical diseases, including methods of prevention, treatment and control. Discussion of the importance of these issues in health interventions with a specific focus on understanding and incorporating culture into the design, implementation, and evaluation of health interventions, communications and promotion projects. Increasing students’ self-awareness of their own and others’ view of health and health issues, while building skills to non-judgmentally consider the complex elements of culture in development of health interventions.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify how their own cultural biases and rules may influence how they define health and view the relationship between health and culture.
  • Students will be able to describe the general biological, political, social and cultural characteristics associated with tropical diseases and their transmission.
  • Students will be able to compare the alternative agendas for prevention, treatment, and control of malaria, Chagas disease, and schistosomiasis in relation to various and diverse cultural settings.
  • Students will be able to ask non-judgmental questions to identify culturally appropriate health interventions, verbal and non-verbal health communications and promotions for tropical disease control and prevention.
  • Students will be able to identify the basic components of the program planning process and ways to introduce culturally sensitive perspectives in each of them.
