MUS 1029 - Aural Skills Fundamentals for Music Majors


This course covers the fundamentals of aural skills for music majors, including basic vocal technique, range expansion, pitch matching, octave transfer, meter determination, contour, protonotation, introductory dictation, basic conducting patterns, the performance of rhythmic patterns using counting syllables, and the singing of scales and simple diatonic melodies using solmization. This course also introduces basic keyboard skills.

Requisites: Music major and appropriate score on the theory placement exam.
Credit Hours: 1
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 2.0 laboratory

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to accurately sing simple diatonic melodies at sight using solmization and more complex melodies with preparation.
  • Students will be able to aurally determine the meter of pieces with duple, triple, or quadruple simple or compound meters.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate fluency in solmization.
  • Students will be able to develop a vocal range of at least an octave.
  • Students will be able to match pitch and transfer pitches outside their range to a comfortable vocal register.
  • Students will be able to perform basic duple, triple, and quadruple conducting patterns while listening and singing.
  • Students will be able to perform basic rhythmic cells using counting syllables.
  • Students will be able to transcribe simple rhythms and diatonic melodies using the correct music notation.
  • Students will be able to translate heard rhythms, pitches, contours, and cadences into protonotation.
  • Students will be able to realize the appropriate concepts at the keyboard.
