PBIO 2480 - Dendrology
An outdoor, hands-on, field course to identify local woody species primarily by bark, twigs, and buds. Topics include reproductive and establishment requirements; species as bioindicator of site quality, disturbance regimes, and land-use history. Necessary to walk several miles in rough terrain and poor weather. Knowledge is compiled via a field guide.
Requisites: PBIO 1150 or BIOS 1710 or GEOG 1100

Learning Outcomes:
- Students will be able to use inductive reasoning to identify woody plants at any life history stage or season to facilitate vegetation surveys.
- Students will be able to use deductive reasoning from plant identification to evaluate habitat and land-use history to facilitate land management.
- Students will be able to describe important biological and ecological plant traits for bioindicator assessment that can be applied to novel natural ecosystems.
- Students will be able to effectively communicate visually and in writing to non-experts the key features in winter plants.
- Students will be able to reflect on key course themes to organize and present knowledge in ways that improve societal environmental literacy.
