MUS 3800 - Wagner and The Ring of the Nibelungen


This course focuses on the life and work of German Romantic opera composer Richard Wagner with special focus on his magnum opus: Der Ring der Nibelungen. The course includes class discussion, student presentations, lectures, and audio/visual presentations. The course includes a week-long trip to see a production of The Ring and attendance at a variety of lectures given in conjunction with the production. The trip for the performances is a required component of the class.

Requisites: B or better in (MUS 1250 or 3210 or 3220)
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 seminar

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to develop and communicate unique insights into one of history’s greatest works of art.
  • Students will be able to apply and discuss understanding of the Ring following the viewing of a live performance.
  • Students will be able to utilize critical tools for evaluation of differing styles of recent operatic productions.
