PA 2100 - Introduction to the Physician Assistant Profession


This course is designed for individuals considering a career as a physician assistant (PA). It is intended to provide students with an understanding of the history and development of the PA profession and their role in the health care system.

Credit Hours: 2
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Analyze the significance of current issues in the health care and political arenas that impact the PA profession.
  • Compare areas of specialization in which PAs practice.
  • Define and discuss professionalism.
  • Describe career and employment opportunities for the PA.
  • Describe the role of the Supervising Physician and the concept of delegated practice.
  • Describe the roles of the PA as a member of the healthcare team.
  • Describe the significant milestones in the development of the PA profession.
  • Discuss regulations governing PA practice, credentialing, licensure, and malpractice.
  • Discuss the admission criteria and curriculum in PA education.
  • Discuss the certification and recertification process for state licensure and NCCPA certification.
  • Discuss the continuing medical education (CME) requirements for the PA.
  • Discuss use of evidence-based medicine and information literacy in professional practice.
  • Explain the important roles that PAs play in providing care to the medically underserved.
  • Identify commonly used acronyms, abbreviations, and terminology used in the PA profession.
