LING 4840 - Documenting and Evaluating Language Variety and Development


The course examines historical varieties of English as well as contributing forms of Scots and Scots Gaelic. More specifically, the course traces the development of contemporary varieties of English, especially those varieties recognized in the Appalachian and southern Ohio regions. Coursework emphasizes synchronic variation and diachronic change as primary elements of language analysis while also highlighting contributions of the languages of Scotland to varieties of American English. Students examine data, interpret texts and apply knowledge of multiple language forms to documentation tasks both inside and outside the classroom.
