MUS 3665 - General Music Methods


This course introduces students to materials and methods for teaching music to children grades K-6. Readings and discussions explore learning theories, philosophies, and historical methodologies related to the General Music Classroom.

Requisites: (Music Education and Music Therapy students) and (Soph, Jr, or Sr) and WARNING: no credit for this course if taken after both MUS 2631 and 2632
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to become familiar with professional expectations for music teachers.
  • Students will be able to consider the diversity of learners and the effect of social environments on the learning process.
  • Students will be able to familiarize themselves with curriculum, methodologies, teaching strategies, and classroom management strategies as they relate to classroom music teaching.
  • Students will be able to use research in music education to inform their theories and practice.
  • Students will be able to develop tools and strategies to help students maximize learning in the general music classroom.
  • Students will be able to reflect upon class discussions, readings, and peer teaching through journal writing and class interaction.
  • Students will be able to identify instructional strategies that promote student learning through field experiences in the general music classroom.
