LET 4510 - Mass Murder in the United States of America: Implications for Criminal Justice


The purpose of this course is to explore serial murder to include the distinctions between definitions, causes and motivations of homicide categories that are gleaned from a detailed analysis of case studies. From analysis of these case studies, students infer and analyze the implications of mass murder for criminal justice practitioners throughout the United States of America.

Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • The student will be able to define the components of multiple murder and the contexts for understanding America’s fascination with serial homicide;
  • The student will be able to analyze historical cases of serial murder, massacres and hate motivated crimes seeking underlying commonalties;
  • The student will be able to differentiate weapons of mass murder;
  • The student will be able to synthesize theoretical foundations to develop strategies and tactics for mitigating mass shootings encountered in a variety of contemporary contexts;
  • The student will be able to formulate a perspective on the implications of mass shootings on social justice in the United States of America and develop a response;
  • The student will be able to recognize the post-incident factors necessary to restore public order and address victims’ needs following a mass murder incident.
