THAR 1810 - Music Skills for Musical Theater I


This class introduces the basics of rhythm, melody, sight-singing, and music notation reading skills. Emphasis is on practical skills for the singing actor, and focus is on skill acquisition through sight-singing of musical theater repertoire and ear training. This is the first of a two course sequence.

Requisites: Warning: No credit if taken after MUS 1010
Credit Hours: 2
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to demonstrate music theory applications such as note recognition, interval identification, key signature, and scale degree from written sheet music.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate rhythm notation identification, perform rhythmic dictation from aural examples, and perform written rhythmic patterns accurately.
  • Students will be able to, through ear training, identify note recognition, interval identification, key signature, and scale degree from aural examples.
  • Students will be able to analyze basic harmony within a musical passage by identifying basic chord structures and elements of music notation from written sheet music.
  • Students will be able to perform accurate sight-singing of basic melody and harmony parts from written sheet music examples from the musical theater repertoire.
