THAR 2870 - Voice and Movement for Musical Theater I


This is an introductory course in movement and speech for Musical Theater actors. Focus is on movement principles, body-breath-voice-speech connection, anatomy, release of inhibiting muscular tension, and the expressive potential of the voice and body. Additionally, we deconstruct elements of space and time to respond to the environment and build the ensemble.

Credit Hours: 2
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 4.0 studio

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the fundamental principles of movement and voice and speech for the stage.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a fundamental understanding of basic anatomy of vocal production, speech and the articulators.
  • Students will be able to efficiently use the breath and body in stillness and in action.
  • Students will be able to increase the expressive range of the voice and body.
  • Students will be able to access the imagination through the voice and body.
