LET 4550 - Forensic Science Capstone


This summative capstone experience provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate competency in the management of evidence from the crime scene to the courtroom through the application of professional knowledge, technology, critical thinking and analysis skills gained over their course of study in the B.S. Forensic Chemistry Program.

Requisites: LET 3500, CHEM 4840 and 4840L
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture

Learning Outcomes:
  • The student will be able to criticize and reframe techniques used in forensic science crime dramas;
  • The student will be able to apply crime scene analysis skills such as evidence recognition and preservation, photography, diagraming, and reporting in a mock scene scenario;
  • The student will be able to analyze various types of forensic evidence using appropriate techniques and sequences;
  • The student will be able to produce defensible reports and custody documentation associated with the analysis of forensic evidence;
  • The student will be able to describe techniques and applications used in forensic document analysis;
  • The student will be able to demonstrate an understanding of quality assurance in the forensic lab including method validation and standardization, analyst certification, and the various standards that influence laboratory accreditation;
  • The student will be able to review and relate attributes and analysis strategies for various firearms, bullets and cartridges;
  • The student will be able to consider the various types of ethical dilemmas and bias and relate their impact on forensic analysis reporting and testimony;
  • The student will be able to evaluate a case where forensic science played a role in a wrongfully convicted defendant;
  • The student will be able to review and relate concepts associated with criminal trial procedure and search and seizure concepts; and
  • The student will be able to testify to the analysis and interpretation of evidence in a mock trial setting using professional knowledge, technology, critical thinking and analytic skills. .
