HLTH 3150C - Community Engagement in Appalachian Health
Explore a variety of topics related to Appalachia such as social, environmental, and health issues both historical and present, the role that community engagement has played in shaping Appalachia today, and the various ways that the local community can shape health outcomes in Appalachia. Through twenty hours of service learning students will engage with the community to combine mutually beneficial community service with academic introspection, focusing on critical reflective thinking, and personal civic responsibility.
Requisites: IHS 2230 or EH 3040 or GEOG 3330 or SOC 3090 or HLTH 2000
Credit Hours: 3

Learning Outcomes:
- Students will be able to explain how the history of the Appalachian region has contributed to health outcomes and disparities.
- Students will be able to apply cultural awareness and historical understanding to their interactions with community members in Appalachia.
- Students will be able to summarize contemporary environmental and public health issues in Appalachia.
- Students will be able to identify the most important health issues from a community perspective.
- Students will be able to discuss how different forms of community engagement have affected health outcomes in Appalachia.
- Students will be able to appraise their own community engagement and how it has impacted the local community.
