THAR 2120 - Mindfulness and Creativity

Mindfulness refines the quality of our attention to the present moment. In this course, students cultivate presence and explore the creative process through meditation, collaborative practice and research. They develop a daily mindful practice through experiential learning and doing. Practices include Yoga, Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction exercises, and various forms of meditation. Students apply mindfulness to their own creative process and work on a creative project of their choice. The course emphasizes the creative process over the final project, developing awareness of how mindfulness informs the creative process. Students cultivate creative collaboration and critical analysis by analyzing a work of art in teams. They research the historical and cultural context of the work and devise a short group project based on their findings. Readings might include texts by Anne Bogart, Chogyam Trungpa, John Cage, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Dr. Kabat-Zinn, Sharon Salzberg, Julia Cameron and Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Theory.
