ITS 4000 - Management and Policy for Emerging Communication Technologies


The course examines market and policy issues associated with emerging communication technologies. Students evaluate unique characteristics of technology markets and how managers and policy makers respond in these dynamic markets. The emphasis is on current market and policy issues and challenges. Representative topics include how technology standards are established, copyright and digital rights management, cryptocurrency, and regulatory issues with artificial intelligence.

Requisites: ITS 2140 and Jr Status.
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to explain unique characteristics of emerging communication technology markets, including standardization, network effects, and two-sided markets.
  • Students will be able to analyze and explain pricing, versioning, and bundling strategies for technology products.
  • Students will be able to evaluate and explain market characteristics and outcomes for covered case studies using the theoretical framework developed in the class.
  • Students will be able to explain the foundations of the creation of policies that govern emerging communication technologies.
  • Students will be able to explain and evaluate the application of antitrust law, copyright law, and other regulatory frameworks to emerging communication technology markets.
  • Students will be able to apply theories associated with emerging communication technology markets and policy in a capstone assignment.
