ART 3680 - Sketching and Rendering for Interior Architecture


This course covers the introduction, exploration, and application of manual graphic communication techniques, essential skills from project ideation to presentation in interior architecture practice. These freehand drawing and rendering conventions are utilized as a vital means to imagine, develop, and represent design ideas through a variety of media including ink, colored pencils, and markers. Topics covered include rapid visualization drawing, ideation, basic perspective, appropriate point of view, composition, tonal contrast, light and shadow, color, textures, and details. Assignments not only encourage technical skill development, but also promote letting go of one’s fear of failure and fostering creative capacity, talents that inspire innovative thinking.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to visually communicate ideas clearly and convincingly with rapid visualization drawing, ideation sketching, basic perspective, appropriate point of view, composition, light and shadow, as well as color, texture, and details.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in a variety of hand-drawing and rendering skills while using appropriate processes, medium selection, and drawing techniques.
  • Students will be able to show competency in incorporating visual scale, proportion, balance, rhythm, and emphasis for interior delineation.
  • Students will be able to portray a sense of depth of line, shape, mass, texture, and materiality.
  • Students will be able to explain, and apply sketching and rendering terminology as these relate to interior space.
