EDSE 3530 - Introduction to Secondary Mathematics Teaching


This course provides foundational knowledge in the skills and dispositions needed to be a mathematics teacher in grades 7-12. Students learn about mathematics standards and curriculum, design research-based math lessons, integrate formative assessment into lesson planning, and analyze school-age students’ mathematical thinking and their own work with school-age students.

Requisites: C or better in EDSE 3500; No Credit if: EDSE 3510
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to describe research-based approaches to teaching mathematics.
  • Students will be able to select and adapt mathematical tasks that engage students in nonroutine problem-solving and mathematical discussion.
  • Students will be able to write lessons plans that connect to research-based practices in mathematics education and state learning standards.
  • Students will be able to describe and enact methods for eliciting student thinking focused on their conceptual understanding in addition to their procedural knowledge during mathematics lessons.
  • Students will be able to analyze students’ mathematical thinking in the form of student work artifacts, classroom videos, and/or field-based interactions with students.
  • Students will be able to explain how to use analysis of students’ mathematical thinking to inform instructional decisions.
