HIST 4800 - What is History in the Twenty-First Century?
This course explores the interaction between the contemporary world and the study of history. It introduces students to the application of historical skills in a variety of settings including government, non-profit work, business, and media, and in historical institutions like museums, historical sites, libraries, and historical societies. Students study and practice how to responsibly engage in historical preservation, research, and interpretation, through a variety of media. Special emphasis is placed on the financial, ethical, political, and interpretive challenges and opportunities that historians face while engaging diverse audiences in a contemporary context.
Requisites: Student must have at least 9 credit hours above HIST 2010
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 seminar

Learning Outcomes:
- Students will be able to identify different roles that history and historians are playing in 21st century society.
- Students will be able to identify approaches and skills needed to accurately identify and convey knowledge about the past.
- Students will be able to describe specific examples of history being used appropriately and inappropriately to inform contemporary debates.
- Students will be able to identify approaches and skills used for historic preservation, including changes resulting from new technologies including digitization.
- Students will be able to explain the role that historical thinking has played and can play in the formation of public policy.
- Students will be able to demonstrate writing and presentation skills necessary to reach a nonacademic audience.
