EDSE 3520 - Introduction to Secondary Language Arts Methods


This course provides foundational knowledge, skills, and dispositions for the preparation of language arts teachers in grades 7-12. Students learn about language arts standards, designing formative and summative assessments. Students also learn approaches for teaching reading, writing, and speaking practices in 7-12 language arts classrooms.

Requisites: C or better in EDSE 3500
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 lecture

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to describe research-based approaches to teaching language arts.
  • Students will be able to write lesson plans that connect to research-based practices in language arts education and state learning standards.
  • Students will be able to analyze and evaluate methods, assessments, and practices for supporting 7-12 learners.
  • Students will be able to design formative and summative assessments which supports 7-12 students understanding of procedural and declarative knowledge.
  • Students will be able to use data generated from the formative and summative assessments to inform instructional decisions.
